Objective Students will evaluate a book using a set of criteria in order to determine if the book is a distinguished contribution to literature. 

Review: The Newbery Award The award can be given to a fiction book or a nonfiction book. The book has to be for kids. The book has to be written in English. The author has to live in the United States. The book has to be published in the United States. The book was published in the past year. The Newbery Medal is gold. The Newbery Honor is silver.

Review: The Newbery Award Criteria (measures) for the Newbery Award: book’s theme (the book’s message) writing is organized, clear, and accurate plot development (what happens in the story) characters are unforgettable setting (the time and place of the book)

Your Task Today: Part One You and ONE partner are a team Your team will discuss which fiction and nonfiction books you have read Your team will decide upon two books that you like Write down the titles of the two books; include the authors

Your Task Today: Part Two Your team will create an award for the two books you chose: a first place award (gold) a second place award (silver) Your team will decide the criteria (measures) for the award Your team will design the two medals

Criteria “Criteria” means the measures, or standards, that you use to judge something For example, the Newbery criteria includes theme excellent writing plot development unforgettable characters vivid setting

Your award must include at least 3 criteria For example: where the book was written when the book was written why you like the book how well is the book written what the theme of the book is what the characters are like the setting of the book For example: how the book is set up how the illustrations support the text the style of the book the characters’ dialog what language the book is in how original the book is how the book helps us understand the world
