Hirsh Goldberg) • Jack Smith (Ron Steinman) • On the Rainy River (Tim O'Brien)

Predict: Based on the following picture, what do you think Cluster 1 will be about?

Ballad of the Green Berets (song lyrics) Background Information: SGT. Barry Sadler- Singer, songwriter, and author, he was also a Green Beret who became famous for his "Ballad of the Green Berets." He wrote the song while recuperating from a leg wound received in Vietnam, and was the number one hit single in 1966. He wrote many other songs and a series of novels about a mercenary soldier. He was killed by a gunshot wound he suffered while riding in a cab in Guatemala. Questions remain about his injury and subsequent death.

Ballad of the Green Berets (song lyrics) Please work with a partner and write the answers down in your notebook: 1.How does the songwriter describe the Green Berets? (Recall) 2. Why do you think this ballad became a number one hit during the early years of the war? (Analysis) 3. How well does this song fit your image of the soldiers who fought and died in Vietnam? (Analysis)

Ballad of the Green Berets (song lyrics) Independent Practice: Please answer and submit on Engrade. (Quiz name: Lesson 4.2 Independent Practice) Tone is an author’s attitude toward a subject. While this attitude can be expressed directly, it is often implied by descriptive words and characters’ actions. What adjectives (describing words) does Sadler use to describe these fighting men? How does his word choice contribute to the tone of the song?
