French Revolution

Chapter 17.3 Assessment 1a. What caused the conflict between the English monarchy and Parliament? The monarchy claimed authority by divine right, and Parliament demanded its rights and powers be respected. 1b. What was the connection between the Magna Carta and English Bill of Rights? Both limited a ruler’s power and recognized some rights for the people. 3a. How was French society organized before the French Revolution? French society was divided into three groups called estates. 3b. What did the Great Fear and Reign of Terror have in common? Both were times when people took violent revenge on those they saw as their enemies.

Chapter 17.3 Assessment 5. Consider how Enlightenment ideas improved governments in England, the United States, and France. How would you answer someone who said that the Enlightenment caused only trouble? Any explanation of long range benefits of the Enlightenment would be appropriate answers.
