Participation over 18s 62% ( 9million ) claim to participate in sport/ physical activity (2007 government stats) Slightly more men take part in physical activity 65% V 60% 38 % did not meet criteria to obtain health benefits 15% were considered to be sedentary How does this compare with the UK?

Fitness in the over 18s UK Australia Encounter health problems linked to lifestyle 67% men & 56% of women are overweight 60% of population is overweight 25% of population is obese 21% of population is obese

Mass participation rates amongst 5-17 year olds UK Australia 70% of boys and girls complete 60mins of mod-vigorous activity most days Boys do 2.5 hours of activity each day whilst girls do slightly less at 2 hours As age increases physical activity decreases 17 % boys 14% girls obese 30% overweight

Government promotion of physical activity 1976 government developed the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) after the failure of the Australian team in the Montreal games The ASC promotes excellence and increase mass participation Creates policy and funds sport
