What is EMA? The Estancia Medical Academy is a “school within a school” program that combines academic instruction with specialized training in the allied health field.

The Goals of EMA… To expose students to the diverse career opportunities available in the health care industry.

Classes that are offered as part of the EMA program…(during bell) Introduction to Health Careers Medical Terminology Sports Medicine Emergency Medical Responder Emergency Medical Technician

Introduction to Health Careers Introduce students to careers available in a variety of health career areas. Introduced to medical terminology, basic health care procedures, health related professions (including those involving patient care) Health career planning

Medical Terminology Sets the foundation for success in the health care field. Learn medical terminology and abbreviations used in various health careers. Identify disease processes and common disorders; understand anatomical and physiological systems of the body.

Sports Medicine Learn basic skills and fundamentals necessary for careers relating to sports medicine. Prevention of athletic injury and increase athletic performances Study body mechanics, treatment and management of athletic injuries

Sports Medicine- continued Nutritional guidelines for maximizing performances Taping and bracing Psychological aspects of competition Training and conditioning techniques

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Learn to provide immediate care to an ill or injured person and train to assist emergency medical service providers. Gain valuable knowledge to enhance or pursue a career in the fire service, sports medicine, coaching, ski patrol, medical facilities, lifeguard and EMT. Practice CPR/AED and first aid skills Patient Assessment, triage, and emergency responsibilities

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Prepare for a career as an ambulance attendant or emergency room technician Increase opportunities for a position as a lifeguard, firefighter, search and rescue team member MUST BE 18 years old at time of course completion 8hrs of ambulance ride along 8hrs of emergency room observation

As a Junior… You will take Sports Medicine for 1 full year

SENIOR YEAR…. Fall Semester you will take Emergency Medical Responder Spring Semester you will be enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician class

Medical Pathway Medallion per CTE (Career Technical Education) The purpose of the CTE medallion is to acknowledge graduating seniors who demonstrate superior performance in their chosen CTE pathway. Each High School in the NMUSD have chosen certain CTE pathways Estancia High School has chosen, MEDICAL

How do I get a CTE medallion? 1. Successful completion of all courses that comprise a specific, district recognized CTE pathway, such that a minimum of 5 courses are completed of which 2 are either ROP or college. 2. Participate in 1 internship, job shadow and/or mentorship related to that specific CTE pathway for a minimum of 20 hours

What do I get out of the Medallion? Medallion recipients get to wear the medallion over their graduation robes and sit in the first few rows at the graduation ceremony (varies by school). Acknowledged by the principal at the graduation ceremony.
