SAE Medium/Heavy Duty Task Force Update Includes: J3068 - Handheld 3-phase AC And J3105 Overhead DC EPRI @ PG&E in San Francisco Rodney McGee Chairman SAE M/H Duty TF Tuesday, November 15, 2016 (Truck/Bus) Wednesday, November 16, 2016 (IWC) SAE TEVHYB13

Current Documents Under Development EV Power Transfer using Three-phase Capable Coupler (J3068) Three-phase AC for usage with on-board or integrated chargers Heavy contribution by Jim McLaughlin and Lennart Balgård in these early drafts EV Power Transfer using Overhead Coupler (J3105) Overhead DC charging Led by Mark Kosowski Wireless charging Not in this SAE TEVHYB13 MD/HD Task Force Covered by sub-group as part of J2954 effort Aims for 250kW power level (vs 22kW) SAE TEVHYB13

J3068 Overview EVSE Must be evaluated to UL-2594, UL-2231 Cordset / Coupler Must be evaluated to UL-2251 Directly refers to IEC mechanical drawings AC --- 62196-2 Sheets 2-IIf and 2-IIe AC+DC --- 62196-3 Sheet 3-IVc and 3-IVc Power levels and voltage Voltages USA 208/120Y & 480/277Y VAC Canada 208/120Y & 600/347Y VAC Power example 16A 480VAC 3ø = 11kW 80A 480VAC 3ø = 65kW 160A 480VAC 3ø = 133kW SAE J3068

J3068 News and Updates Meetings and documents Several meetings held in November New drafts circulated for each meeting 30-day topic (official commenting phase) starting soon Prototype demonstration project Completed basic testing of prototype EVSE and School Bus at NREL in Golden showing three-phase charging; protocol testing to follow in the coming months Installed two charging stations at Torrance Unified School District; and buses have recently transported students Met Labs (NREL) in Baltimore testing EVSE Schematics and implementations to be released SAE J3068

J3068 News and Updates SAE J3068

SAE J3068 Combo AC single-phase 120/277/347Y VAC AC three-phase 208/480/600Y VAC Up to 1000 VDC Up to 1000 VDC (higher current) SAE J3068

APTA load-out for handheld manual Specified Default Three-phase AC (using 6mm pins) Single-phase AC (including 277 VAC for example) DC charging using SAE 2847/2 Could limit usage of passenger car infrastructure SAE J3068 Combo Inlet Optional Alternative Single-phase AC (using 3.6mm pins) Offers direct reuse of passenger car EVSE DC charging using SAE 2847/2 Limited AC power; No three-phase; No mandatory AC lock SAE J1772 Combo Inlet SAE J3068

J3105 Overhead Charging Document Overview Document wants to standardize the interface between the Overhead infrastructure and the bus Strategy- combine present requirements/systems with future needs and produce a standard looking forward Power Levels Power Configurations Connection Points Communications Safety Alignment Protocol

Approved Requirements On August 5, 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that the AQMD had been selected to receive $45.4 million to develop and deploy medium-duty plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The program would be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and would require a 1:1 cost share. Part of this cost share was to come from an anticipated $5 million award from the California Energy Commission (CEC). EPRI committed the balance of the required cost share. EPRI partnered with Odyne Systems, VIA Motors and Pathway Technologies to develop, manufacture and deploy the PHEV’s.

Summary J3105 Requirements are being identified from The existing systems Survey results are considered as future Certain document sections will be shared from other documents The plan is to compare the existing systems to the new requirements and determine the new standard for overhead charging. Currently, an initial draft document is being reviewed by the committee. Document should be finalized early next year.
