Conversion of Units of Capacity

Objectives By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: Perform conversion from L to cL and vice-versa.

Why convert from one unit to another? What happens if you are given a measurement in one unit, but need to use it in another?

Why convert from one unit to another? For example, when you are baking cupcakes, and in the recipe it says that you will need 1000 mL of oil. But the bottle of oil says that it contains 1 L. How do you know if you have enough oil? In order to find out, you would need to convert the unit of mL to the unit of L.

Activity 1: How many centilitres are there in 1 litre? 1 L = 100 cL

Conversion of litre into centilitre Example a. 2 L = cL 2 L = 1 L + 1 L = 100 cL + 100 cL = 200 cL Or 2 L = 2 x 100 cL

Conversion of litre into centilitre Example b. 5 L = cL 5 L = 5 x 100 cL                          = 500 cL

Conversion of litre into centilitre Example c. 0.75 L = cL 0.75 L = 0.75 x 100 cL = 75 cL Example d. 1 2 L = cL 1 2 L = 1 2 × 100 cL = 100 ÷2 = 50 cL

Conversion of litre into centilitre Example e. 10 L 75 cL = cL 10 L 75 cL = (10 x 100 cL) + 75 cL = 1075 cL Example f. 300 cL = L 300 cL = 300 L 100 = 3 L

Example of some common Conversion of litre into centilitre 100 cL = 1 L 25 cL = 1 4 L 75 cL = 3 4 L = 0.25 L = 0.75 L 10 cL = 1 10 L 50 cL = 1 2 L = 0.1 L = 0.5 L
