IONS: How is an ion different from an atom?

IONS When an atom gains or loses electrons, it becomes an ion. Atom is no longer neutral, it has a charge Only Valence electrons can be gained or lost. Can form cations and anions.

CA+IONS Form from metals. Lose electrons Have a positive charge. Na+, Mg2+, or Al3+. Transition metals can have multiple charges, because multiple cations.

ANIONS: Form from nonmetals. gain electrons Have a negative charge. Cl-, O2-, or P3-.
