1. State three Muslim teachings about peace. Allah created the world with the intention that peace would be part of his creation. Muslims believe in the personal struggle for peace of the greater jihad. All Muslims belong to the Ummah, which demonstrates ideas of living together peacefully Standing up for justice in the world is one way of achieving peace. In some cases, it may be necessary to go to war to secure peace. back

2. State the three parts of peacemaking. Justice – Muslims believe in a direct link between justice and peace. Forgiveness – Muslims recognise everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance. Reconciliation – the idea of making up after a conflict. back

3. How do Muslims respond to conflict? Muslims work to resolve conflict Try to reconcile groups in conflict As Allah is merciful then people should apply this to their own lives. Muslims may apply situation ethics Fighting is seen as a last resort after everything else has been tried. Muslims believe they should not forgive those who work against Islam. back

4. State two teachings about the use of passive resistance. Islam teaches to strive for justice and to resist oppression. Muslims must resist zulm, cruelty and injustice. It is important to achieve peace using non- violent methods. Islam is often taken to mean ‘peace’ back

5. What is Just War theory? A set of principles that is used to decide whether a war is fair and meets the criteria to be justified. back

6. When is Harb al-Maqadis justified? When protecting the freedom of Muslims to practice their faith. To strengthen the religion of Islam if it is being threatened. Protecting Muslims against attack. back

7. State a Muslim teaching on Weapons of mass destruction. Use of WMD not supported because of the extensive damage they would cause. Innocent life should not be threatened. Impossible to regulate WMD under Islamic conditions of war because of the damage that could be caused. back

8. State two ways that Muslims overcome the issue of conflict. *Peaceful rallies and marches are held to promote peace. *Interfaith groups work together across religions to promote peace. Police and community groups work together. back

9. Name three conditions for a Holy War to happen. A reason to defend the faith The war must be declared by a religious leader Must be a last resort Avoid harming innocent people and civilians The war must not be fought to gain land Treat enemies fairly back

10. Why do Muslims work for peace? To follow the teachings of Islam to promote peace and work together. To live as Allah intended and to work to try to bring justice to the world. Help to care for others in the world, which is a duty outlined by Muhammad to humans. back

11. What are differences between the way Shi’as and Sunnis see Just War Theory? Shia Muslims recognise Jihad as one of the Ten Obligatory Acts whereas Sunni Muslims do not place the same emphasis on it. back

12. What are the benefits of WMD’s? Minimal loses are incurred by the attackers WMD’s can be used as a deterrent They provide an opportunity to end a war quickly, preventing further casualties back
