The Sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense The Sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. Ex: She sits on a chair. There may be some groups of words that make sense but not complete sense which is called a Phrase. A sentence has a verb but a phrase hasn’t. Ex: “under the table, at home". A Paragraph is a number of sentences grouped together and relating to one topic; or, a group of related sentences that develop a single point.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 1. Academic Essay Writing Writing an academic essay involves the same kind of process of evaluating, of weighing up a topic – you examine a statement, or a concept, or a situation to test its value, to find its strengths and weaknesses.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 2. Thesis This type assumes that your research is complete, that your final thesis draft has been examined and approved by your major professor and committee members, and that you are now ready to prepare the thesis in final form.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 3. Summary In writing a summary, you usually start with an overview that states the whole point of the source, even though the source you are basing it on did not start that way.

It is important for you, before you start to write a summary, to find out which of these two kinds is called for. One is called the analytic summary and the other the paraphrase summary. In the analytic summary, you speak in your own person, explaining what the author of the work you are summarizing said, and speaking of the author as a separate person. In a paraphrase-summary, as in a paraphrase, you pretend to be the author of the work and speak from her or his point of view.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 4. Pre'is Writing Précis writing is one of the most useful skills you can acquire for your work both as a student and as a professional (the 'executive summary' of a report is an example of a précis).

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 5. Report Abstracts There are two types of abstracts: informational and descriptive. Informational Abstracts communicate contents of reports include purpose, methods, scope, results, conclusions, and recommendations. Descriptive Abstracts tell what the report contains include purpose, methods, scope, but NOT results, conclusions, and recommendations.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 6. Letter Writing Writing Letters is the most common way to communicate. These days the form of basic letter has taken the shape of fax and e-mails. Informal letter; the letters which are sent to the known persons, relatives, friends, etc are called informal or friendly letters.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 7. Memo it is a little piece of paper with a cute letterhead that says something like: "From the desk of ..." or "Don't forget ..." or "Reminders ...”.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 8. Cover Writing Your application letter is one of your most important job-search documents. An effective letter can get you a phone call for an interview, but a poorly written application letter usually spells continued unemployment. The difference can be a matter of how you handle a few key points.

Kinds of Documents in Writing Skills 9. Resume A resume is a written document that is used to market your background to potential employers. The purpose of a resume is to obtain an interview with a prospective employer. Therefore, it is important that you have a resume that is organized, well written and highlights your education, experience, skills, and accomplishments.
