American Heart Association Hands-Only CPR

The GOOD SAMARITAN legislation is designed to minimize the fear of possible legal consequences of doing CPR when help is given “in good faith” during an emergency in the community.

1. Tap and Shout Secure the scene before you enter.

2. Look, Listen, and Feel Look for no breathing or only gasping

3. Yell for help Send someone to phone 911 If alone, leave victim and call 911, or use cell phone Provide EMS with current address Provide phone number for EMS to contact

4. Start Chest Compressions Push down about 2 inches Let the chest come back up to its normal position Ensure that compressions are performed at a rate of 100 beats per minute Continue compressions until the victim begins breathing again or emergency personnel arrives

5. Locate the nearest AED

6. When AED arrives, turn it ON and follow prompts Adjust victim’s clothing to enable pad-to-skin contact Open pad package and plug in pad connector Peel pad backing and apply both pads. Wait and stand clear as AED performs analysis In instructed, press shock button.
