Where Are The People? North Italian Plain VS Southern Italy

North Italian Plain Land Agriculture Transport Manufacturing Mainly flat plain. It is covered in rich alluvial soil which has been deposited by the River Po. Agriculture Flat land, rich soil, plentiful rainfall and heat give rise to very successful agriculture. Intensive farms provide a high yield per acre. Transport Flat land has favoured the building of roads, railway lines and canal. This region has a dense transport network, which helps trade and encourages settlement. Manufacturing The industrial heart of Italy, Milan is Italy’s main industrial and business city.

River Po

Southern Italy Land Agriculture Transport Manufacturing The Appenine Mts. take over much of southern Italy. 80% of the region is mountainous. Soil cover is thin. Agriculture Mountainous land, poor soil and long dry summers make agriculture difficult. Farms are small and unproductive. Transport Mountainous land has made building roads and railways very expensive. This has discouraged communications, trade and settlement in Southern Italy. Manufacturing A shortage of capital (money), communications and industrial tradition discouraged manufacturing in Southern Italy.
