What on Earth is Soil?.
SOILS More Than Just Dirt. What Is Soil? Soil is a layer that covers most of the land surface of the earth. Soil is what forests, fields and gardens grow.

Understanding Dirt Was is soil?

How much dirt do you eat in your life time? About ONE pound !!!!

So what’s in dirt?

Plants grow better in different soils .. Maple Trees Hydrangeas have a different colored flower, depending on the soil (acid or basic)

3 main Soil components … Silt Sand Clay Organic matter Full of nutrients Sand Dry soil Looses water & nutrients quickly Clay Forms a water barrier

Silt Holds lots of water & nutrients Fluffy, holds air Very fertile soil Needed to grow a good garden Plants: Hardwood trees, nice lawn, vegetables

Sand Dry soil Water runs right through it Nutrient poor Conifers Pine Evergreens

Clay Hard Holds water Gives structure Difficult for roots to grow through

Where does the water stay ? Air spaces

Scientific Method Problem / Questions Hypothesis Experiment Data Conclusion
