The Work Breakdown Structure Project Management The Work Breakdown Structure What is a project? A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service. What is a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)? An activity oriented family-tree division of work tasks that define the entire project.

The Work Breakdown Structure WBS Terminology: Activity: A task or work package performed over a period of time. Relationships/Precedence: Dependencies that exist between activities. Duration: Length of the period of time to complete a task. Milestone: Zero time duration activity. Early Start: The earliest an activity can start based on project logic. Late Start: The latest an activity can start without delaying a project completion. Early Finish: The earliest an activity can finish based on early start and duration. Late Finish: Latest an activity can finish without delaying a project completion. Float: The amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the project finish date. Total Float: The amount of time that a pathway may be delayed from it's early start without delaying the project finish date. Critical Path: The longest time period from start to completion of a project; also the shortest total length of the project.

However, the total float can not be exceeded without affecting the project end date.
