Art Criticism and Aesthetic Judgment Learn the 4 step method

Four Steps to Art Criticism 1. Description 2. Analysis 3. Interpretation 4. Judgment

Description Carefully examine the art or object. Write down measurements, colors, size, where it is located—read the fine print. Write down what you see.

Analysis Analyze by category what you see by using the Elements of Art. (You should be able to do this better later after you have learned more about the Elements.)

Interpretation What was the artist trying to say? What was happening in history at that time? Can you make some guesses about what the artist was getting at?

Judgment The last step is deciding whether or not you appreciate the work or not.
