What is an Apprenticeship? Earn and Learn Get paid whilst working for the company/ organisation. Complete a qualification linked to your work.

Training part of the Apprenticeship? Each apprenticeship is different. Apprenticeships might be linked to a college or university, so the apprentice will be given time off normally 1 or 2 weeks block to go learn the theory side. Some might be linked to a training provider where you have to prove your competency (this might be distance learning – online)

Is getting an Apprenticeship an Easy Option? You have to apply (application forms are not easy as you might be faced with several tricky questions asking for 400 words or characters and you have to sell yourself). Interviews are not easy (some apprenticeships might have several layers before you get offered an apprenticeship Telephone interview Group Activity Computerised test Interview panel (2-5 on the panel) Offered the apprenticeship

Do all jobs offer an apprenticeship route? Is there an apprenticeship to become a Doctor? No Is there an apprenticeship to become an Accountant? Yes (some can lead to full Chartered Accountant) Is there an apprenticeship to become a Nurse? Yes (normally starting as a Nurse Associate) Is there an apprenticeship to become a Lawyer? Yes starting as a Legal Assistant

Example Company – Royal Mail Degree Apprenticeship Location – Oxford City Centre (Oxpens Road) Salary – starting on £19,000 and rising to £25,000 Training Provider: Middlesex University Closing date: 30th June Possible Start date: 16 September 2019 Expected Duration: 3 years Qualifications: At least 2 A-levels in any subjects (Grade E or above) Desired skills and Personal Qualities: Communication skills, IT skills, Attention to detail, Organisation skills, Presentation skills, Team working

Why would a student do an apprenticeship rather than university? No university debt (as the employer will pay this) Get paid Learn by doing Get real experience Still get a qualification

Compare these two students? Student A – University Student B - Apprenticeship Completed university and has a full BSC Degree in Engineering Completed a degree apprenticeship and has a full BSC Degree in Engineering Duration 3 years Duration 4 years £50,000 student loans debt (please remember how you pay this back) No Debt Was working part time during university for 3 years earning £10 per hour Earnt £15,000 per year (year 1) Earnt £16,000 per year (year 2) Earnt £17,000 per year (year 3) Earnt £18,000 per year (year 4) Currently applying to several employers* Has been offered a permanent job after successfully completing year 4*

How to search for Apprenticeship?

How to register?

When to search? Search for ideas in year 12. Search seriously from October (some big companies will be advertising them such as BBC) Keep searching throughout year 13 and beyond.

How to apply? Click on the apprenticeship advert you are interested in. Click apply (this will either take you to an external website or will keep you in the website you are in).

How many apprenticeships should I apply too? As many as you like. There is competition and so you never know what you will be offered

How do I increase my chances in getting offered an apprenticeship? Good grades Work Experience Relevant experience (Voluntary, NCS etc) Produce a portfolio? (engineering project) Know your strengths Create a strong CV
