Early Life Born Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. on April 2nd, 1939 in Washington, DC. Started singing in his local church when he was four years old. Found peace in music from an early age. Joined a vocal group called The New Moonglows in the early 1950s.

Influences Influenced by the vocal styles of: Rudy West of The Five Keys Clyde McPhatter Ray Charles Little Willie John Frank Sinatra Nat King Cole

Motown Records Broke the Top 40 for the first time on his own in the 1962 with his single “Solo Switch” Duets with Tammi Terrell wowed the country “Ain't No Mountain High Enough” “If I Could Build My Whole World Around You” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” became Motown’s best-selling record of the 1960s.

“Whats Going On?” Looked at the forces shaping society during the 1970s Wrote the song from his brother, Frankie’s perspective after his return from Vietnam. Helped to change the national conversation surrounding conflict during the 70s. Ranked by Rolling Stone as the 4th greatest song of all time.

Crossover Success Began recording love songs after marrying his second wife. Recorded one of the most revered love songs “Let's Get It On” Became his second number 1 on the Billboard charts. Was pushed by Motown to go on tour to capitalize on his newfound success.

Personal Life Developed a serious dependence and addiction to crack & cocaine. Addiction lead to increase paranoia and depression. Married to Anna Gordy (Berry Gordy’s sister) & Janis Hunter Father of three children. Marvin III (adopted with Anna Gordy) Nona Frankie

Death and Legacy Fatally shot by his father Marvin Gay Sr. on April 1st, 1984. The New York Times ran the story on its front page after his death. There have been Marvin Gaye Celebration Days annually in Washington, DC since 1985.
