I. 509BCE: nobles (Patricians) overthrow Rome’s king A. Patricians form a republic, in which “citizens” vote for representatives in a Senate 1. Most citizens are Plebeians (farmers & merchants), who can’t serve in the Senate, they want change! I. 509BCE: nobles (Patricians) overthrow Rome’s king B. Plebeians are allowed to serve in the gov. 1. Senate = Patricians, Two Assemblies = Plebeians 2. Senate has more power ($/war/emperor) C. Women= some rights, influence. D. Slaves= no rights Patricians Plebeians

1. The Justinian Code contained 5,000 Roman Laws II. Plebeians demand written laws A. “12 Tables” written = basic legal code 1. Romans have equal protection under the law III. Other Legal Legacies of Rome A) People are innocent until proven guilty B) Accuser must prove their case, not the accused IV. Justinian’s Code A. 1000 yrs later Emperor Justinian ordered writing down of all laws 1. The Justinian Code contained 5,000 Roman Laws 2.
