Midland Sailing Club Race Officer Tasks Open up start box & turn power on. Remove shutters from windows. Observe wind direction & strength from balcony or dam wall Look in Course Guide book & select course or if confident create your own course. Select start line & identify 1 st. Mark, usually to windward. Fill out signing on sheet indicating the start line. Identify the mark rounding sequence of the course starting with the first mark. You may draw the mark rounding sequence on the marks schematic but remember that the course shown on the front of the start box is the course to be sailed.

Put the sign on sheet in the club foyer for sailors to use.10 mins before start. Liase with safety boat crew & let them know what the course is & where there may be a need for the safety boat e.g.. Gybe marks close to a lee shore if windy. Return to start box Put out course boards in sequence starting with the first mark at the far right slot (as you look out over the reservoir). At the socket on the wall marked Automatic starter, switch on & leave for a few minutes to allow the system to prepare itself, do not reset the counter on the starter (this happens automatically). Check that all is ready & then check that sailors are ready (common courtesy) & indicate when you will be starting. Note. During the winter season it is important that races are started promptly at published times.

When ready, press RED button on starter system Check that 1 light shows on the start box. Continue to monitor the firing of guns & light system to ensure that all is correct. When all boats have started retrieve the signing on sheet & return to race box. Ensure that all boats are sailing the course as shown by the race boards at front of box. Record laps & positions on signing on sheet Towards end of race make judgement as to which should be the penultimate mark of the course in order to finish the leading boat as closely as possible to 3960 seconds (displayed on counter) & identify which of the two finish lines should be used. Remove all boards from box except for the mark displaying the penultimate mark & signify finish line by A or B (place A to the left of penultimate mark board & B to the right)

Press Red button once to start shorten course process, this will sound four guns & both lights at front of start box will flash. Manually finish all competitors by pressing Green button as they sail through finish line. Read finish times as displayed by counter when the first part of the boat breaks the finish line. Record time on the sign on sheet in the elapsed time column. After the last boat has crossed the finish line switch off the automatic timer at the wall. If there is another race to run repeat the process. If racing is finished for the day, remove all course boards, replace window shutters & lock, turn off power & ensure all doors are securely locked. Copy results from signing on sheet onto race log sheets in blue book (kept in bar area of clubhouse) see visual for standard Provide list of first three boats in each race for flag officer to announce. Relax & have a beer or two. A short report / bit of fiction would be nice for the website.

Course Guide The MSC Course Guide book contains a page by page list of courses that are known to work for any given wind direction, this is not intended to stop Race Officers setting their own courses but is intended to assist in the setting of good quality courses. The book should be located to the left of the starting system as shown.

The sheet depicted shows the type of race date & start times, course set, wind direction & strength, weather conditions & state of the reservoir (water level). All of this gives a full history of the races & will help to show what the wind direction & strength have been over a period, the same goes for the water levels. A further point is that in the case of insurance claims or protests it may be necessary to identify some or all of this info.
