Applying one Habit of Mind from start to finish. Gill Hubble and Graham Watts St Cuthberts College, Auckland

The St Cuthberts experience in making HOM a whole school reality Whole school thinking skills programme Common thinking language Reflective and metacognitive culture

Taking one habit at a time... Habit of Mind for each term Launch at the start of the term Communication to parents Staff training Explicit thinking skills lessons Infusion in the curriculum Review at the end of term

COLLEGE HABITS OF MIND

Staff training exercise How can I use the content of this lesson to help my students experience one or more HOM? How can I invite students to consciously use the habits as they plan and evaluate work in my class? How can I help students become aware of these habits in their own and others behaviour? How can I encourage conversation about these habits in my classroom? How am I modelling these habits in my own behaviour?

Explicit Lesson 1

Now you have finished this challenge take a few minutes to discuss these questions with the person next to you. What were the different ways you worked around being stuck? Do you think you persisted ? Score yourself and explain your answer How could you have shown greater persistence? How can you persist as you prepare for your exams over the next few weeks?

Explicit Lesson 2 SOUNDS LIKE When you are persisting you might say to friend... LOOKS LIKE When you see a friend persisting they might… FEELS LIKE When you are persisting you may think to yourself… MEANING TO ME What does persisting mean to me?

HOM communicated to... Staff Students Parents and therefore the whole college community

Task 1 - Do a PMI on this delivery model in relation to its use for your school. Plus points? Minus points? Interesting points?

Task 2 - Design an explicit lesson to introduce a HOM What does it look like? What does it sound like? Where would it be important to use? Not important to use? What is a good/fun way to introduce so that students will remember it? Find a story or situation that illustrates the HOM Develop some reflective questions which unpack the HOM
