Science Vs Religion

Lesson objectives To understand and identify religious and scientific explanations to universal questions To gain understanding of how people use both explanations to answer important questions in their own lives.

Daddy’s dilemma Katie is seven years old, she has had her pet hamster Benny for 3 years and really loves him. One morning she wakes up and finds Benny dead. She asks her Daddy what happens to Benny now he has died. What does he say?

What makes one scientific and one religious? Daddy’s choice If Daddy chooses to say to Katie that Benny has gone to heaven then he has given a RELIGIOUS EXPLANATION If Daddy chooses to say that Benny will be buried and will become part of the soil and dirt he has chosen a SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION What makes one scientific and one religious?

Scientific and Religious Explanations A scientific explanation is one based on scientific fact, that can be proved by evidence gained by scientists such as evolution. A religious explanation is one based on opinion or faith, one that can not be proven by evidence but is based on a person’s belief such as heaven and hell. Write this in your books

Explanation Apprentice I am Alan Sugar, and am looking for my next group of apprentices. All of your groups will be given the same question. Your group will need to present an explanation for your question which will be either scientific or religious. My assistants will give you a couple of clues if you need them. Myself and my two assistants will choose the most convincing argument and the winners will win a small prize As you are working my assistants will be observing your groups looking for people working together and thinking of good arguments. GOOD LUCK!

Why is there suffering in the world? Your question is......... Why is there suffering in the world?

Decision time! Who will win?

Quick religious and scientific explanations! How was the earth formed? What is the meaning of life? What is love? Is there an afterlife? Does God exist? Is God good?

Great lesson, well done!!
