DIVISION shortcuts Ready for some magic?

Try these mentally… 124 ÷ 8 = 79 ÷ 5 = 3789 ÷ 20 = 999 ÷ 25 =

DIVIDE by 8 HALVE 3 times E.g. Divide 76 by 8 ?? Once … Half of 76 is 38 Twice … Half of 38 is 19 Three times … Half of 19 is 9.5 76 divided by 8 = 9.5

DIVIDE by 5 DIVIDE by 10 then MULTIPLY by 2 E.g. Divide 89 by 5 ?? 89 divided by 5 = 17.8

DIVIDE by 20 DIVIDE by 2 then DIVIDE by 10 E.g. Divide 489 by 20 ?? 489 divided by 20 = 24.45

DIVIDE by 25 DIVIDE by 100 then MULTIPLY by 4 E.g. Divide 489 by 25 ?? Multiply by 4 = 5 multiplied by 4 = 20 take away 0.44 = 19.56 489 divided by 25 = 19.56

Shortcuts… Divide by 8 - HALVE 3 times Divide by 5 - DIVIDE by 10 then MULTIPLY by 2 Divide by 20 - DIVIDE by 2 then DIVIDE by 10 Divide by 25 - DIVIDE by 100 then MULTIPLY by 4
