Countdown to Your New Co-op OCEA Symposium October 2016

Learning Goal develop an understanding of the components of the curriculum in the two cooperative education courses, so that we can begin to consider how we can effectively implement the new curriculum

Background consultations feedback from OCEA spring conference, 2016 alignment and connection to Community-Connected Experiential Learning, K-12 Draft Policy, Creating Pathways to Success, Growing Success and other Ministry policies and initiatives

Philosophy and Intent of the Cooperative Education Curriculum increase opportunities for students to participate in co-op who may not have an appropriate related course enhance academic rigour students design learning focus on skill development, reflection and knowledge transfer reflect diverse learners and learning opportunities support education and career/life planning

The Cooperative Education Courses Cooperative education course linked to a related course includes: Cooperative education curriculum expectations in Strands A and B (4 Overall expectations) Related course curriculum expectations Community component Stand-alone cooperative education course includes: All curriculum expectations in Strands A-D (8 Overall expectations) Community component Strand A Safety & Initial Requirements 2 Overall Expectations Strand B Learning Plan & Knowledge Transfer 2 Overall Expectations Strand C The Inquiry Process 2 Overall Expectations Strand D Building Learning Capacity 2 Overall Expectations

Elements of Curriculum The Overall Expectations (OEs) describe in general terms the knowledge and skills students are expected to demonstrate by the end of each grade. The examples help to clarify the requirement specified in the expectation and to suggest its intended depth and level of complexity. The examples are illustrations only, not requirements. The Specific Expectations (SEs) describe the expected knowledge and skills in greater detail. All curriculum expectations must be accounted for in instruction and assessment, but evaluation focuses on students’ achievement of the Overall Expectations. The Teacher Prompts help clarify the requirements and suggest the intended depth and level of complexity of the expectations. These are illustrations only.

Skills and Knowledge in Curriculum Activity: Read the draft sample Teacher Prompt Identify some of the skills and/or knowledge that might be related to each Teacher Prompt.
