Welcome to Mr. Abbott’s English 9 Class

This is a required course for receiving a Maryland diploma. WARNING!!! This is a required course for receiving a Maryland diploma. All ninth grade students must take and pass this class in order to graduate.

The Warrior Way Class Expectations Students will be ready. They will come prepared to class with all necessary materials. Students will be respectful. They will show respect for themselves, each other, the teachers, and the environment. Students will be responsible. They will be responsible for their actions, their words, and their work. These expectations are in place to ensure that all students will have an equal opportunity to learn in my classroom.

Class Rules 1. Students must be seated and ready to work when class is scheduled to begin. There will be no running into the room to avoid being “late”. We will be following the Wicomico County lateness policy, so make the right choices each day. 2. All assignments are expected to be completed and turned in on the day they are due. 3. Students are not allowed to chew gum (of any kind), eat food, or have drinks (Plain Water in a Clear Bottle is allowed) in the classroom. 4. Students are not allowed to use cell phones, iPods, or any other similar devices in the class. We will be following the Wicomico County and Mardela Middle and High School policies. 5. Students will be expected to be in class during the entire period. Any requests to be excused must be approved PRIOR to the absence. Students will have the same number of days to complete work due to an absences as the number of days or class periods missed.

Consequences 1. Nonverbal and/or verbal warning. 2. Phone call home to parent or guardian. 3. After-school detention for 30 minutes and conference with teacher. 4. Office referral and parent conference. *All of these consequences are guidelines and may be used in the order I feel is appropriate.

Grading Policies 1. Your class grade will be determined by the average of your scores on all assigned work. 2. The two main areas will be: * 50% FORMATIVE ASSIGNMENTS (classwork, homework, daily activities, process writing grades…) * 50% SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENTS (tests, quizzes, projects, product writing grades) 3. All work is to be turned on time. No exceptions!!! 4. Extra credit is not an option!!! Well, very rarely…

Required General Supplies: 3 Ring Binder (1-2”) with Dividers or 3 Brad Folder with Pockets Pencils Pens (Black, Blue, Red, Green Ink) Loose Leaf Paper Highlighters (pink, blue, green, yellow) Colored Pencils (24+ colors) USB Drive Recommended Items: Tissues Personal Hand Sanitizer I am NOT responsible for supplying you with any class materials!!!

In Mr. Abbott’s class… All students can learn. All students can come to class prepared to learn. All students can accept responsibility for their behavior and the choices they make. All students have the right to feel safe and secure. All students can behave in a manner in which teaching and learning can occur. All students will learn in a classroom that is free from disruption. All students can correct the mistakes they make.
