KENT COUNTY Safety Edge Projects Lessons Learned

Vehicle leaves roadway on to the right shoulder, then over corrects, crosses centerline sticking oncoming vehicle head on.

Shoulder condition?

Maintenance Issues Low Shoulders require maintenance dollars Kent County’s shoulder repair costs for 2011 where $450,000. Over $160,000 in new gravel. Equipment and Labor Involves constantly working in traffic

Pavement & Shoulder Maintenance Damage to outside edge of pavement 7 shoulder repair units

Bailey Drive –between Vergennes St and Boynton Avenue (2.65 Miles) 3 Different Projects Bailey Drive –between Vergennes St and Boynton Avenue (2.65 Miles) Ada Drive –between Fox Hollow Dr and Thornapple River Dr (1.31 Miles) 18 Mile Road– Casnovia to Peach Ridge Ave (1.5 Miles)

Bailey – Narrow shoulder and horizontal curves Selection Criteria Bailey – Narrow shoulder and horizontal curves Ada Dr. – Narrow shoulder for higher volume 18 Mile – Narrow shoulder

Safety Edge

30 to 40 degree

Three methods Crush and shape and 2 Course Resurface Placed Safety Edge on both courses Single Course overlay Trenched existing shoulders to place safety edge Crush & Shape and 2 Course Resurface Placed Safety Edge during Top Course

Items to Consider Cost to Place (including trenching) Asphalt Valley Gutter Areas Gravel loss at edge (incline) Trapping Water on Shoulder Compaction

COST Additional HMA 30 Additional Tons per Mile/Side (3.5 inch Depth) 1 Mile Both Sides @ $55/ton = $3,300 Trenching Existing Shoulder Estimated Cost = $1,000 per mile

Gravel loss one year later ½ to 1.5”
