Eric Frein Caught

Residents of northeastern Pennsylvania breathed a sigh of relief Thursday after police arrested Eric Frein following a long manhunt. Authorities spent nearly seven weeks hunting for Frein, 31, who was on the FBI's list of its 10 Most Wanted fugitives and is accused of killing one state trooper and wounding another in an ambush outside a police barracks. After countless hours of searching, a team of heavily armed federal marshals spotted him at the Birchwood-Pocono Airpark, an abandoned airport near Tannersville. When the marshals found him in an open field away from the airport hangar, he was unarmed. Frein obeyed the marshals' order to get down on his hands and knees, and acknowledged his identity. Officers shackled him with handcuffs belonging to Cpl. Bryon Dickson, the state trooper he is accused of fatally shooting on September 12. After weeks as a fugitive, Frein is now sitting in a cell in the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Blooming Grove. Authorities have not discussed a possible motive for the crime, but said Frein has talked and written about hating law enforcement. Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty.

In Other News Apple CEO Tim Cook came out Thursday, acknowledging publicly for the first time that he is gay. In a column he wrote for Bloomberg Businessweek, the Apple chief said that he had tried to maintain "a basic level of privacy." But he said he decided that desire for privacy was stopping him from working for the benefit of others. "I don't consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I've benefited from the sacrifice of others," he said. "So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it's worth the trade-off with my own privacy.” Cook, who grew up in Alabama, said he has long been open about his sexual orientation, but had just not previously discussed it publicly.
