Six Tips to Inspire Instruction
Presentation transcript:

Software Onboarding and Instructional Design Ask if anyone has heard of software onboarding before.

TechSmith User Assistance Team Create materials that teach users about our software Lots of traditional materials - tutorials, written guides Try to respond to users needs Goal is to make every user successful

What is software onboarding? The process by which users are introduced to a software product Like employee onboarding - goal is to get users (employees) up to speed fast Helping users understand how concepts they are learning help them

Why is this relevant to instructional design? Trying to teach users new concepts as quickly as possible Asking users to adopt a whole new set of behaviors Requires an understanding of the learner and a design that acknowledges and works with their circumstances or environment

How TechSmith has explored onboarding Read a book called “The Elements of User Onboarding” “People don’t buy products, they buy better versions of themselves.” Find the ways to least intrusively, but most effectively help users as they learn our software

Our Challenge Devise a way to provide learning content that is helpful, easy to consume, and accessible from within the software

TechSmith’s Solution A small library of resources within the product that users can choose to use and explore Links to further learning resources Selected the content based on user data

Let’s see it!

Discussion and Questions Has anyone encountered a similar problem? How did they solve it? Are there any aspects of this idea that are applicable in more traditional training environments?
