Maureen Mitton Director, School of Art and Design UW-Stout Writing the PAR: Identifying the Challenges and Lessons Learned

Writing the PAR: Identifying Challenges and Lessons Learned UW-Stout Writing the PAR: Procrastination or Challenge Identification

Writing the PAR: Identifying Challenges UW-Stout Our Challenges: Major structural/organizational changes: Major program/curriculum changes: Budgetary limitations:

Writing the PAR: Identifying Challenges UW-Stout A Perfect Storm?

Writing the PAR: Identifying Challenges UW-Stout More Perfect Storm Challenges: 3 tenured faculty (interiors ) all have significant administrative duties All 5 new majors must go through NASAD accreditation approval at the same time as CIDA. New Chairs, Director in 2011/2012 and new Dean 2012 (the same semester we had the CIDA team visit) A Perfect Storm: No wonder I couldnt get going.

Writing the PAR: Identifying Challenges and Lessons Learned UW-Stout Face and Identify Challenges: By clearly identifying these challenges we were able to create a reasonable approach and to do list You can too: What are your biggest challenges? List your challenges, List items on the + side as well

Fall 2010: meet with area faculty regarding self-study and setting of calendar/timeline, first communication with the faculty at large -serious look at program changes for new major Fall 2011: finalize new major program (these dovetailed in with the self study), new course documentation, aggressive discussions with faculty at large on providing course documents and work for exhibition, work on draft versions of curriculum matrix and the PAR Spring 2012: finalize self study and curriculum matrix, all documents finalized for the new major structure Summer 2012 final versions of curriculum matrix and PAR complete and mailed on time Fall 2012 CIDA team visit Strategy/Timeline UW-Stout

Writing the PAR: Strategy UW-Stout Strategy: Set up clear roles for each faculty member One writer of PAR and Matrix all others work from drafts and contributed (writer on sabbatical) In times of greater resources we all wrote portions –that also worked well.

Writing the PAR: Strategy UW-Stout Strategy: Identify specific questions about writing the PAR or certain standards and discuss those with CIDA The self-study is key but so is the Matrix Set up a timeline for tasks for those outside your department, keep communicating well in advance of deadlines

Writing the PAR: Strategy UW-Stout Strategy: In writing the PAR Focus on content of the PAR and edit for content –get that right before you worry about editing down for length. CIDA staff are an incredible resource, if given time and clarity they can be very helpful.

Writing the PAR: Specifics UW-Stout Writing: Specifics New General Ed requirements begin 2013, because the PAR was written for 2012 it does not detail new requirements those are future changes.

Writing the PAR: Specifics UW-Stout Writing: Specifics This is a direct quote from the report detailing how a standard is currently displayed for team and will change in the next year. Also, for the final project, students synthesize all aesthetic and performance criterion for material and finish specification by selecting appropriate materials, finishes, and FF + E to fit a specific design program. Please note that this course has been revised for students entering the program in fall 2012, and has been retitled Interior Design Contracts and Codes. A majority of content from this course related to furnishings, equipment and finish materials will now be incorporated into the new course Interior Design Practice, Materials and Finishes (DES-214). This will allow content related to codes and contracts to be covered in greater detail in the new DES-314 course.

Writing the PAR: Specifics UW-Stout Writing: Specifics This is a direct quote from the report detailing how a standard is currently displayed for team and will change in the next year. Until the academic year Interior Decorating/Design Textiles (APRL- 145) was the course that covered textiles for interiors. Content for this course includes information related to fibers and fabrics used in design/decorating planning of residential and commercial settings. Analysis of various fiber and fabric components used in interior design is also covered in the course. Please note that for students entering the program in fall 2012, Interior Decorating/Design Textiles (APRL-145), will no longer be required and that content will be folded into the new course

Writing the PAR: Lessons Learned UW-Stout Lessons Learned: Check and double check that the display reflects what you indicate on the PAR. Do students outcomes match the PAR and matrix –and is that clear? Dont rest on your laurels from previous visits!

Writing the PAR: Lessons Learned UW-Stout Lessons Learned: Some things are not student work but should be clearly presented, such as: Standard 15. Assessment and Accountability Standard 16. Support and Resources
