Sarah Thompson Deputy Returning Officer Candidates’ Briefing Sarah Thompson Deputy Returning Officer

We all collectively pledge: To be positive To be respectful To have a good time

What we will cover What do we mean by representation? Elected vs. Selected The Rules The election process & the voting system Campaigning tips Answering your questions

But also because we are proud to be led by students Elected vs. Selected Appointment to major union offices should be by election in a secret ballot in which all members are entitled to vote; The governing body should satisfy themselves that the elections are fairly and properly conducted; But also because we are proud to be led by students

Selected Best Person for the Job Skills and Knowledge Experience Selection by experts Best fit to job

Elected Most popular Policies and Ideas Credibility Selection by “the people” Best fit to the students

The Rules Law of the land – hate crime, equality legislation, verbal and physical acts Regulations of the University – conduct of students, treat with respect and dignity, abuse of IT facilities Rules of the Union – respect and dignity on Union activity, election rules

The Rules – Free and Fair This election will be by secret and consenting ballot Do not steal personal information of other voters Do not vote on behalf of someone else. Don’t bribe a voter or official We do allow candidates to give voters tokens of support providing they do not cost more than 10p

The Rules - Independence This Union will not endorse any candidate Student staff/Full-time officers must not campaign whilst at work or in SU Uniform Core staff will remain impartial The Union will not endorse any candidates Union resources will be allocated equally to all

The Rules - Respect This Union expects all to be treated with respect No physical or verbal abuse Manifestos and other material must not contravene the law on hate crime or inciting hatred We reserve the right to specify restrictions Debate the issues not the person

Online Conduct Online harassment and cyber bullying can take a wide variety of forms including: “Trolling” (sending menacing or upsetting messages) Identity theft “Doxxing” (making available personal information) Cyber stalking Online bullying can be seen as more pervasive than face to face harassment because it can “follow the person home.” Social Media is an effective campaigning tool and a great way to communicate your ideas with students. Online harassment will not be tolerated in these elections. Debate the issues not the person.

Online Conduct: What can you do? Think before you type – this also includes thinking before retaliating to hate you might be receiving Report it to suelections@uclan.ac.uk Block or remove unwanted posts from your profiles or online feeds Brief your campaigns team about their online conduct and what to do if they feel affected Take a break from being online or on social media and do something else you enjoy Your Students’ Union Advice Centre is a third party reporting centre for Hate Crime: to report hate crime or harassment, at any time, email ReportHateCrime@uclan.ac.uk

The Rules - Toughness The Election is not in isolation. Break a law, University Regulation or Union Rule you can face further problems Make this an election to remember not a potential disciplinary to forget

I will not rule: That elected officers can not express an opinion That someone has too many friends on Facebook That breaches of copyright rule you out of the election That candidates can not express a preference for other candidates That material with spelling mistakes should be disqualified That failure to write a manifesto or attend question time disqualifies a candidate

The wonders of transferable votes Elects the “least unpopular” candidate Voters rank their candidates If I can’t have Jane (#1), I’ll have Tom (#2), if neither then Alan (#3) Sometimes called Single Transferable Vote (STV) or Alternative Transferable Vote (ATV) All votes are in play until the point you are eliminated Get second preferences

Do we all love Lucy?

Here comes Ben!

Poor Lucy!

Campaigning Tips They don’t trust... They listen to... I will…… I want…….. I promise…… I will make sure…. They listen to... Having listened to students, I think... Students tell me that...
