The challenge Lack of compliance with sustainability standards in Myanmar supplier factories Working /living conditions for the employees precarious Consumers in Europe have a low level of understanding about the textile supply chain Limited impact of action taken by governments and economic actors along the supply chain Fractional rights of unions to enforce workers’ rights Brands to intensify due diligence efforts and seek cooperation in tripartite setting

The challenge

The project in a nutshell 3 year project (5/19 – 4/22) funded by EU EU contribution: 1,350,000.00€ Total cost: 1,687,500.00 € Overall objective: “Improving working conditions, promoting labour and environmental standards and reducing labour rights abuses in the textile and garment industry” Working closely with fashion brands and supplier factories; also supporting trade unions Myanmar Building on lessons learnt from the SMART Myanmar project (2013 – 2019) and upscaling it

Specific objectives (outcomes) Improve compliance with social and environmental standards and transparency at factory level in Myanmar Increase consumers’ knowledge and awareness on sustainable fashion in Europe (Germany, Belgium, France, Netherlands) Improve collaboration and advocacy between actors in the value chain in Europe and Myanmar and replicate successful sustainable practices in the garment and textile sector

Specific objectives (outcomes)

Expected impact Working conditions of 200,000 workers in the Myanmar garment and textile sector have improved 220 factories micro, small and medium enterprises apply sustainable consumption and production practices with EU support Garment exports from Myanmar to EU increase by 300 % at the end of the project 380,000 EU consumers have increased their knowledge on sustainable fashion
