Techniques for Informing Definition- Explanation- Description- Demonstration- Narrative- Most use a blend of all techniques.

Definition~ Break something down by its parts and explain how they add up to identify the topic. Explain the essence meaning, purpose or identity of something. Ex: idea or concept- What is obscenity?

Description- Using vivid language so others can “see” “hear” what you are talking about. Ex. Rustling of leaves, creep of the conveyor

Demonstration- Calls for physical modeling and verbal elements as you lead the audience through. Ex. How to milk a goat. Ex. Tie a fishing lure

Narrative To tell a story captures audience attention A story explaining the success of Bill Gates Ex: Telling how a friend failed a job interview

Selecting Topic- Individuals Topic- Disease or Psychological Disorders Viral Genetic- Albino Disorders Bacteria Do something that interests you! Brainstorm ideas of what disease and would you talk about.

Crafting Speech- Audience Analysis- determining who hears your speech. Word choice/topic selection is critical so it relates and develops common ground. How does this disease relate to your audience? Ex: I do NOT like slang or swear words or border line words. “Crap” is not appropriate Makes you sound uneducated!

Clarifying and Simplifying Message Move from General to Specific Example: One symptom is a cough Usually this cough starts as a dry hacking cough similar to a cold and progresses into a deep wet one. Give examples so people can understand and relate it to something else.
