“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” (John 11:21-27)

Jesus and life in the Gospel of John The promise: Life εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα In practice: How to show it

Jesus and life in the Gospel of John In him was life (1:3) Rebirth, new life offered to Nicodemus (3:1-13) Living water offered to the Samaritan (4:14) “The Son will make live who he chooses” (5:21) “I am the bread of life” (6:35, 48, 51) “I have come that they might have life” (10:10) “I am the way and the truth and the life” (14:6) HERE: “I am the resurrection and the life.

The promise: Life εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα The one who believes in me will live, (a) even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me (b) will never die. How can (a) and (b) both be true? The last sentence literally: “will not die εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα [in the age = forever]”, i.e. no eternal death.

In practice: How to show it Confessing confidence and faith in Jesus as Martha shows in the story Showing love (a) as Jesus demonstrates in the story (11:3, 36), (b) see also 1 John: “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.” (1 John 3:14) Having hope for the future, again as Martha shows.

“if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” (Romans 8:11) https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSjm_eSAjIhUiLwuaspaHUWD7oJbfPiwhVXwgUCmGB4xj2lKQNsEA (accessed 31/03/2017)
