Innovative Activism to Influence the System

A year in the life of a freedom activist Started two local PACs Made 5 election Robocalls Successfully replaced two local county commissioners Received one Death Threat (filed on restraining order) Four different lawsuits/legal actions Filed 158 different AG/ Public Disclosure Campaign Finance Complaints Initiated 18 Attorney General lawsuits against opposition Over 30 radio shows, 20+ newspaper articles, 3 positive editorials, 1 negative

A year in the life of an activist continued… Wrote about 100 articles (18 months) Produced 9 short videos Credited with helping to end a handful of local political careers Blamed for two Democratic Party County chairs resigning Accused of creating the political equivalent of a “hacker’s denial of service attack” following the campaign finance complaint process Helped coin the new term “getting Morganized” Inspired a “how to survive Glen Morgan” self-help form circulated among the opposition.

A year in the life of an activist continued… Filed two ethics board complaints Filed multiple Bar complaints (against politicians who were lawyers and who committed perjury on government forms) Filed 14 different records requests with local government Blamed for the resignation of the Director of the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission Testified on two dozen different pieces of legislation Confronted one surveillance team assigned to follow me Recruited multiple “insider” sources including whistleblowers to collect more data and assist in exposing the truth.

How to make Activism Effective Focus on your Major Goal – “Reduce the influence/control/size of government and their crony supporters” Create Teams – not everyone wants to be the guy getting death threats and lawsuits – have people fit their skills and interests to the team – don’t force it. Be relentless – you won’t win every battle, but you can still win the war Be adaptable – plans, tactics, and opportunities change

Who we need to influence Insiders – politicians, leaders, financial supporters Opposition – if you can’t change them, at least give them a good reason to not enjoy being in conflict with you. General Public – When you can break through the apathy, and win their support – your job gets easier.

Stories & Styles that Influence Emotional – Tales of Tyranny – Video is best tool Corruption – Most people assume government is corrupt – just need proof – let’s give it to them. Incompetence – Breaks down the support that the other side has for their utopian schemes. Humor – If you can make people laugh, they will come back for more
