The Parent’s Guide to Understanding their Adolescent! Solution Revolution The Parent’s Guide to Understanding their Adolescent! With Tara Gretton

Best Hopes Best Hopes The Adolescent Brain Video Solution Focused Conversations Working on what work – Sharing resources and building on success 0 being things at their worst and 10 being your Best Hopes

Best Hopes Please can you share your name and your Best Hopes for the session Please can you also scale your Best Hopes 0 being things at their worst and 10 being your Best Hopes

What is Solution Focussed Brief Therapy? Solution Focused Brief Practice is about building on existing strengths, identifying times when the problem isn’t happening and not being focused on the problem The Solution Focused Approach is all about change, and change that enables clients to find their own solutions in a short time. It’s all about finding out what the client would prefer their future to look like, and what their strengths and skills are in order for them to be able to achieve their preferred future and building on what they are already doing well. The Solution Focused approach is a very collaborative and respectful approach; its basic principle is that the client is the expert of themselves and that the practitioner can better help a client by asking subtle questions about what has worked in the past; what helps now and what their preferred future (Best Hopes) might look like, rather than focusing on talking about the problem. There is a framework to the Solution Focused Approach whereby the practitioner asks the client what their Best Hopes are for the session/training (whatever the setting), the practitioner also asks questions to elicit strengths and exceptions (times when the problem isn’t happening). This enables the client to see that the problem isn’t happening all of the time. This can be brought about by a general conversation of what the clients likes/does well. Tara to give examples of this work.

The Adolescent Brain Not only are adolescents changing physiologically, but their brains are really changing and this explains a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du8siPJ1ZKo

The Primitive Brain Rider: Pragmatic, logical, selfish, moral, ethical and intellectual Spends most of its time in the past or the future Complex motivations Horse: Primitive, emotional with simple emotions, threat minded, powerful, lives in the here and now Primitive drives (Haidt , 2012)

Solution Focused Conversations ‘Solution focused practice aims to restore children’s problem-solving potential and mobilize their inner resources or resourcefulness.’ (Milner and Bateman, 2011:11) “

How it works Establish positive aims based on what the person wants Find out what goes well/how they cope – Build on existing strengths Exceptions to the problem – A time when they have done something well Scaling Compliments – Persevere! Noticing the smallest of changes

Working on Works Exercise: - Split into groups and share successes in your parenting and positives about your interactions with your child/children Only focusing on positives and no talking about any problems

Solution Revolution Have you got any questions?

Who do you go to if you have a concern about a student’s safety?
