Title The Life Cycle of a Butterfly
Grade Level and Michigan Curriculum Framework This lesson would be good for Kindergarten to first grade. Is in the life science content area.
Lesson Plan Goal and Objectives Identify the four different stages of a butterfly life cycle (from egg, caterpillar, pupa or cocoon, to a full-grown adult butterfly). And be able to label them Put together their own butterfly life cycle book Explain and share the stages of a butterfly's life. Listen to a poem about a butterfly life cycle by Karen Shapiro, and discuss our thoughts about it. Listen to the story The Very Hungary Caterpillar by Eric Carle Write a short story of where the adult butterfly might go after the cycle is over.
Technology I will have the students play games and take quizzes on the butterfly. It will give the students a good review of what we discussed in this lesson. The students will use the computers in the class, two at a time per computer. I expect the students to learn how to use the internet in a safe fun way as well as to encourage further learning. The only resources needed for this internet task would be to know the life stages of the butterfly. The website can aid in helping understand and make the lesson fun and productive. I will tell them that not all sites are safe for children and that they need to tell an adult before using the computer. Rubric I will have the students self assess them with a check list of the information they should know. Then I will collect them and assess my lesson. Rubric: Was my instruction successful? Did my lesson meet the intended objectives? Was the lesson age appropriate? Was the time given enough to learn the material?
