Attack on Pearl Harbor December 7th, 1941

Attack on Pearl Harbor Since 1931, Japan has been invading and conquering neighboring countries and islands They are taking resources and raw materials to fuel their war machine and build their empire

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Attack on Pearl Harbor Our relationship with Japan was getting worse each year starting in 1931. We hated how they turned towards dictatorship, aggression, and fascism By 1940 we placed a trade embargo of oil and steel upon Japan. They could not get it anywhere else and were infuriated by this!

Attack on Pearl Harbor Seeing no compromise with the U.S, and the belief that war was inevitable, the Japanese military officials believe they have a better shot at defeating the U.S. through a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. “Waking a sleeping giant!”

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Attack on Pearl Harbor Japanese planes attack the U.S. navy fleet on Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941 The Japanese attack using machine guns, torpedoes, and high level bombers The goal was to annihilate the U.S. Navy and our ability to fight back

Attack on Pearl Harbor The U.S. was able to fight back, but not until major damage had been done: More than 2,400 killed 10 ships sunk 1,139 wounded soldiers What saves our Navy is that our aircraft carriers were not in port that day

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Attack on Pearl Harbor The next day President FDR asks for a declaration of war against Japan and receives it immediately from Congress Germany then declares war on the U.S. as Japan is an ally of Germany

Attack on Pearl Harbor The U.S. would respond with an attack on Tokyo known as “Doolittle’s Raid” in April 1942 The attack on Pearl Harbor inspires American patriotism and nationalism and brings the U.S. into World War II on the Allies side
