Membership Growth Index

Objective Develop a predictive metric to identify a club’s current and future membership growth successes and challenges

Assumption #1 A truly effective Rotary club is one that: Sustains or increases its membership base 2. Implements successful projects that address the needs of its community and communities in other countries 3. Supports the Rotary Foundation through both program participation and financial contributions 4. Develops future club leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club Essential

Assumption #2 Consistent, moderate membership growth is the single best Key Performance Indicator of an effective, vibrant club. Likewise, chronic (multi-year) membership loss is a red flag identifying a club with some degree of dysfunction.

Examples

Examples

Assumption #3 Club leadership owns club performance The only way to strengthen a club is through the commitment and focus of the sitting club leadership, resolved to lead the changes needed to return to vibrancy

Membership Growth Index (MGI) Leading indicator of a club's future membership trend Index is the percentage gain or loss of membership for a three-year period, ending the most recent July 1 Negative MGI (exceeding -5) is a key indicator of a club that needs strengthening of the club experience, club leadership and/or membership strategies

Why Three Years? In 3 years, little has changed in the external environment -- demographics, economy, etc. 3 years vs. 1 year removes some volatility from year-to-year membership swings, producing a more stable index Whatever has changed in 3 years is almost entirely within the club -- the result of strategies (intentional or not), policies and beliefs held by its leadership and its members
