Box Plots Lesson 12-3

Objectives I can display data in a box plot. I can interpret data in a box plot.

Vocabulary box plot – uses a number line to show the distribution of a set of data using the median, quartiles, and extreme values.

Example of a Box Plot

How to Make a Box Plot Step 1: Order the data from least to greatest. Then draw a number line that covers the range of the data. Step 2: Find the median, the extremes (lowest and highest #), Q1, and Q3. Mark these points above the number line. Step 3: Draw the box so that it includes the quartile values. Draw a line for the median. Extend the whiskers from each quartile to the extremes. Include a title. Box plots separate data into four parts. Each part shows 25% of the data.

Example 1 Draw a box plot of the car speed data. 25, 35, 27, 22, 34, 40, 20, 19, 23, 25, 30

Example 1 Draw a box plot of the car speed data. 25, 35, 27, 22, 34, 40, 20, 19, 23, 25, 30

Example 1 Draw a box plot of the car speed data. 25, 35, 27, 22, 34, 40, 20, 19, 23, 25, 30

Got It? 1. Draw a box plot of the data set below. $20, $25, $22, $30, $15, $18, $20, $17, $30, $27, $15

25 miles per hour (the median) Example 2 Half of the drivers were driving faster than what speed? 25 miles per hour (the median)

Example 3 What does the box plot’s length tell about the data? The length of the left half is short and the right half is long. This means that the speeds of the slowest half of the cars are all bunched up. The other half is spread out.

Got It? 2. What percent were driving faster than 34 miles per hour?

Example 4 The box plot below shows the daily attendance at a fitness club. Find the median and the measures of variability (Q1, Q3, IQR, range, outliers). Then describe the data. The median is 72.5. Q1 is 65 and Q3 is 80. The IQR is 15. The range is 54. The outlier is 110. Without the outlier, the data is spread evenly.

Got It? 3. The number of games won in the American Football Conference in a recent year is displayed below. Find the median and the measures of variability. Then describe the data.

Homework Hint When it says “find the measures of variability” it means to find the Q1, Q3, and IQR. When it says “describe the data” it means…. Is the data spread out or compact? Is the data more on the right or left side? Are there any outliers? If so, what are the outliers?
