WWII

Domestic Impacts of WWII Pearl Harbor- Surprise attack on American military base in Hawaii on Dec. 7th 1941. Internment of Japanese, Germans, Italians- temporarily imprisonment or isolation by federal government(camps). Fear of “enemy aliens” from Axis Nations. Possible arrest, deportation, fingerprinting, curfew, travel restrictions.

Major Events Lend Lease Program- passed in 1941, allowed president Roosevelt to sell or lend supplies to any country whose defense he considered vital to the safety of the U.S.. Battle of Midway- turning point of WWII in the pacific in which Japanese advance was stopped.

Major Events D-Day- June 6th 1944, Allies landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. Attacked German Forces. Fall of Berlin- May 7th 1945. V-E Day, Allies surround German capital of Berlin, Germany surrenders.

Manhattan Project Manhattan Project- secret project to create an atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Started in 1942, cost several billion dollars and employed tens of thousands. Hiroshima- Aug 6th 1945, 60,000 dead instantly Nagasaki- Aug 9th 1945, 35,000 dead instantly Over 200,000 died (injuries, radiation)

Theaters of War WWII fought on two fronts. European Theater and the Pacific Theater. European Theater- Germany fought Allies on two sides. Russia on eastern side and France, Great Britain, and U.S. on the western side. Pacific Theater- fighting that occurred in the pacific, mostly between U.S. and Japan. Ended by A-Bomb.
