#1: Rulers There are three types of rulers for machinists: Flex Rules Spring and Hook Rules Ground or Rigid Rules

Rulers Flex Rules: Thin and flexible. 6, 12, or 18 inches They are universal tools. These rulers can help you double-check your work.

How to Use a Ruler Please watch the video below. y2cY

Rulers Spring and Hook Rulers Adjustable

Rulers Ground or Rigid Rules 12, 18, 24, and 36 inch sizes The picture on the right shows a ruler with a square, a protractor, and a centering head.

#2: Calipers Vernier Calipers--still used in schools because they are very strong and easy to use. Industry still uses the longer 18-inch Vernier calipers. Dial Calipers Electronic Calipers

Calipers Zero Dial (Digital)

#3: Outside Micrometers Carbide-wear tips Insulated handle Tenths of an inch scale on sleeve

How to Read a Standard Micrometer Please watch the video below.

#4: Height Gages This tool is used for both measuring and layout work. It measures how tall something is. A height gage sits on a flat surface (such as a table) and measures up.

#5: Indicators Both types are precise and delicate. They measure 1/1,000 or 1/10,000 Probe type: small and versatile Travel type: more sturdy and measure greater ranges.
