2-7-2017 Main Idea: Many parts of our bodies must work together. To produce the energy needed for movement, muscle cells need a constant supply of oxygen, nutrients, and water.

Goal You will understand how breathing delivers oxygen needed by cells to the blood.

The Path of Air: Nose Pharynx Trachea Bronchi Lungs

Keeping Your Lungs Clean Hairs inside nose Goblet cells in nose and airways release sticky mucus that helps trap particles & keeps air moist. Cilia covers inside of airways

Pharynx After flowing through the nasal cavities, air enters the pharynx, or throat. The pharynx is the only part of the respiratory system that is shared with another system—the digestive system.

Bronchi Air moves from the trachea to the bronchi, the passages that direct air into the lungs. The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. Alveoli-- Tiny sacs of lung tissue specialized for the movement of gases between the air and the blood. Each alveolus is surrounded by a network of capillaries. It is here that the blood picks up its cargo of oxygen from the air.

Moving Oxygen into the Blood Capillaries have very thin walls. Oxygen can move through them and into the blood from lungs. Moves from blood to cells. Once in blood, oxygen can be picked up by your red blood cells and carried to heart.

Removing Waste from your Blood Carbon dioxide: waste made by cells. Carbon dioxide is passed through thin wall of capillaries Goes from cells to blood and then into air you exhale.

Lungs The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. Inside the lungs, each bronchus divides into smaller and smaller tubes. At the end of the smallest tubes, there are small structures that look like grapes. They are called Alveoli.

The Path of Air--Review The entrance that moistens and warms air as it enters the body.
