Welcome! Let’s get creative!

ARE YOU AN IMPATIENT PERSON?

While you are sitting in traffic after a long day at work?

In the super long line at the grocery store In the super long line at the grocery store? And on top of it, you have to use the bathroom?

But what about when you are trying to solve a problem and you need a good idea?

(We just have to install the switch). YOU’RE IN LUCK, Because in the next 30 minutes, I am going to teach you how to be deliberately creative. Your impatient self will no longer have to wait for your ideas because you will be able to switch your creativity on and off. (We just have to install the switch).

Before you say anything... Lets break up into 4 groups

In the video, where was _________ affecting their creativity? Group 1: HABITS Group 2: BEING AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES Group 3: IDEA DESTROYING Group 4: JUDGMENT Discuss in your groups and be ready to share your thoughts in 2 minutes! Hand out infographic during 3 minutes - face down

GROUP 1: In the video, where were habits affecting their creativity? Toothbrush activity: 2-3 volunteers I just gave you a new toothbrush, you're welcome When problem solving, we tend to take the first idea that comes to our mind and we run with it.

Creativity Habits are a must because If you always do What you’ve always done, You’ll always get What you always got. © adapted from Roger Firestien, PhD

deliberately creative: Step 1 to being deliberately creative: Break your habits and see the world in a new way. How else can I do this? What if? © adapted from Roger Firestien, PhD

Time to color! Color with your non-dominant hand

Group 2: In the video, where was being afraid to make mistakes affecting their creativity?

“The most important creative product that you will every work on is yourself.” Gerard Puccio If you can work on yourself creatively, you can do anything creatively.

30 MISTAKES MISTAKE QUOTIENT © adapted from Roger Firestien, PhD Creativity flourishes in an environment where it is okay to make mistakes.

If you’re not making any mistakes, you’re probably not making any discoveries.

Time to color!

Group 3: In the video, where was idea destroying affecting their creativity?

Comments please on my new idea! to make heat plate work © adapted from Roger Firestien, PhD

A reptile’s response to something new: RUN FROM IT ATTACK IT or EAT IT DON’T BE A CROC! A reptile’s response to something new: RUN FROM IT ATTACK IT or EAT IT © Roger Firestien, PhD

So when you or someone else has a new idea… use a tool we like to call PPC (pluses, potentials & concerns) Consider the pluses and potentials of the idea Phrase the concerns as questions (how to…?, how might…?) Overcome concerns by brainstorming solutions © Roger Firestien, PhD

Time to color!

Group 4: In the video, where was judgment affecting their creativity?

To be deliberately creative, you have to DEFER JUDGMENT Idea and Decision do not have the same definition end beginning I don’t know if you know this, but idea and decision do not have the same definition. All of your ideas are important an idea is just the beginning

Defer Judgment But what if you all deferred judgment and this idea ended up sparking a really good idea for someone else?

Defer Judgment

SO GET ALL OF YOUR IDEAS OUT ON PAPER! Set a quota for yourself. The first ⅓ of ideas are the obvious ones The second ⅓ of ideas are the silly, crazy ones The third ⅓ of ideas are the keepers, the original and refined © Roger Firestien, PhD

Let’s be honest, 10-12 ideas generated is just not enough Let’s be honest, 10-12 ideas generated is just not enough. SO LET YOURSELF GO!

Time to color!

To become deliberately creative: Break your habits and see the world in a new way. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Experiment, Fail, Learn. Don’t be a Croc! Build ideas up, not down. Defer judgment.

As you finish coloring your infographic, i'd like to leave you with this.

It starts with you. If you can’t digest everything from this presentation, just pick one thing and start there.
