Vowel teams vs. diphthongs Two vowels go walking and the first one does the talking. Two vowels together that make one sound. The vowel sound is long. Ex: meat (The a makes the e say it’s name.) Two vowels blend together to make a new sound. A sound that starts with one sound and glides into another Ex: clown (In diphthongs y and w are considered vowels. The ow join together and a new sound is made.)
