7 syllable types There are seven syllable types: closed open vowel-consonant-e Vowel diagraph/vowel team Diphthongs R-controlled Consonant-le we are going to learn closed syllable this week!

diphthong Two vowels blend together to make a new sound. A sound that starts with one sound and glides into another Examples of diphthong vowel teams: oi oy ew ou ow Examples: coin boy loud down

Vowel teams vs. diphthongs Two vowels go walking and the first one does the talking. Two vowels together that make one sound. The vowel sound is long. Ex: meat (The a makes the e say it’s name.) Two vowels blend together to make a new sound. A sound that starts with one sound and glides into another Ex: clown (In diphthongs y and w are considered vowels. The ow join together and a new sound is made.)

Word work Write this week’s word work words in your journal. Skip 2 lines in between each word. Then label each word; 1.write the word 2. identify the vowels with a dot 3. identify the syllables with a curved line 4. identify all the vowel sounds 5. identify the type of syllable
