Ecosystem Organization Chapter 2.1 By Ms. Anderson

Ecosystem Organization An ecosystem is made up of all the LIVING (Biotic) and NON-LIVING (abiotic) parts of an area. As you revel each picture on this slide have students identify if it is a picture or living or non-living objects.

Ecosystem Organization The living parts of an ecosystem are called BIOTIC FACTORS. Biotic factors include any item that comes from a living organism, like eggs, fur, feces, feathers, snake skin, etc.

Ecosystem Organization The non- living parts of an ecosystem are called ABIOTIC FACTORS. Abiotic factors include temperature, wind, sunlight, fresh water, salt water, rainfall, etc. in an area

Ecosystem Organization The organisms in an ecosystem can be organized into groups. From simple to complex, the groups are: Organism (Individual) Population Community Ecosystem/Biome Biosphere

Ecosystem Organization Organism: an individual member of a species. Example: An elk

Ecosystem Organization Population: a group of individuals of the same species that live together. Example: Herd of elk

Ecosystem Organization Community: All of the populations of species that live and interact in an area. Example: Mountain animals--eagles, elk and deer, wolves, bears, mountain lions

Ecosystem Organization Ecosystem or Biome: Community of organisms plus the abiotic environment of the community. Example: Mountain animals and forest climate

Ecosystem Organization Biosphere: The part of Earth where life exists. (From the deepest parts of the ocean to high in the air).
