Team based learning in an Optics module Dr Marta Vianya Vision and Hearing Sciences Senior Lecturer in Optometry marta.vianya@anglia.ac.uk Student’s attitudes towards team based learning in an optics module My name is Mvianya and today I will share with you how I introduced TBL in one of my modules

MOD003496 Tutorials Sem1 2016/17 2017/2018

Team Based learning? Can TBL improve attendance? Can TBL improve conceptual understanding (i.e. marks MCQ test)? Student’s view TBL in Optics?

TBL Intervention (3 tutorial sessions) Canvas reading materials Exercises 1) Pre-Class preparation RATi (Polleverywhere) RATt (Polleverywhere) 2) Readiness Assessment Test Teams (4 students each aprox) 3) Application exercises TBL has 3 main components

Conclusions - Attendance Improved attendance to 3 tutorial sessions

Conclusions - marks No difference MCQ mean exam results: 2016/17 Mean 73 (SD 13) 2017/18 Mean 71 (SD 12)

Conclusions – student’s views TBL Accountability Preference for Lecture or TBL Student Satisfaction Favours TBL Overall TBL-SAI scale ‘We help each other and can ask questions without being afraid of judgement’ Anonymous student 17/18 cohort

Conclusions – lecturer’s views Positive Exciting run sessions Very positive engagement Revealed student misconceptions during session. Less email clarifications / individual meetings to clarify concepts? Negative Preparation time RAT too long (1 hour with 10 questions). Review questions? Use timer polleverywhere? Active learning rooms ideal Think in advance lecture room requirements Careful with the questions

Thank you marta.vianya@anglia.ac.uk

Refractive Management & Methods of Ocular Examination (MOD003496) 30 credit module, runs over two semesters Opthalmic Dispensing course 3 elements of assessments; pass rate 40% or higher each element Sem 1: 13 lectures 6 labs 3 tutorials MCQ Class Test (week 11, Sem1)

Issue Poor attendance Tutorials previous delivery module 16/17 Can TBL improve attendance? Can TBL improve conceptual understanding (i.e. marks MCQ test)? Student’s view using the TBL-SAI (Mennenga, 2012)? Limited research related to implementation of TBL in Optics related courses
