Bellwork: 2/5/18 What are some of the syncretic religions during this era (1450-1750)? What accounts for the continued spread of Islam in the early modern era and for the emergence of reform or renewal movements within the Islamic world? Explain how the Spanish might have prevented uprisings like the one known as Taki Onqoy. What caused the cultural changes that took place in India during the early modern period? The Scientific Revolution caused changes in the way that people looked at the world around them, how did the new world outlook affect the culture of Europe at the time?
Bellwork answers Voodoo (Vodou) or Macumba are examples, do you have more? Islam continued to spread because conversion to Islam generally did not mean a sudden abandonment of old religious practices, but rather more often the assimilation of “Islamic rituals, cosmologies, and literatures into…local religious systems.” Continued Islamization depended on wandering Muslim holy men, Islamic scholar, and itinerant traders, who posed no threat and often proved useful to local rulers and communities. In part, the emergence of reform or renewal movements was a reaction to the blending or syncretism that accompanied Islamization almost everywhere and that came to be seen as increasingly offensive, even heretical, by more orthodox Muslims. They might have shown more tolerance for local beliefs, tried to blend more with local customs, or used gradual conversion instead of force. Major changes were caused by the formation of a state cult under Akbar and the rise of bhaki and Sikhism. The Scientific Revolution led people to question church teachings, which further caused the separation between church and state. This occurred at a time when the Catholic Church was already struggling to justify its importance.
You must know the causes, as well as the consequences of the Scientific Revolution to have success on the AP Exam. Pages 741 & 742 have more examples of the roles played by cities in world history: the rise of universities in major European towns. Read the paragraph on pages 741/742 beginning with “Beyond” twice and take notes; it’s a good example of how cross-cultural interactions create change. The Scientific Revolution marked a major turning point in the way Westerners saw the world around them. Pay close attention to the section Science as Cultural Revolution. Compare examples of cooperation and conflict between science and religion in Europe to examples of these in the Islamic world in this era. AP Exam Tips
