A map scale represents the Earth’s surface drawn smaller than it really is. A map is drawn to scale. Scale means that a small distance on the map stands.

Displacement vs. Distance. Distance Distance (d) – how far an object travels. Distance (d) – how far an object travels. Does not depend on direction.

Analyzing 2D Maps Quantitative Qualitative

What does Quantitative mean?

What does Quantitative mean? Explain using NUMBERS

What does Qualitative mean?

What does Qualitative mean? Explain using WORDS “Mr. Meyer drove to school by driving on King street, Upper James, and then Mohawk road”

How could we explain a map using WORDS?

Qualitative Question 1 Ashley drove from Winnipeg to Regina Describe Ashley’s Journey in WORDS

Answer Ashley drove WEST from Winnipeg to Regina

Qualitative Question 2 James drove from Winnipeg to Edmonton Describe the journey in WORDS

Answer James drove NORTH WEST (or WNW) from Winnipeg to Edmonton

Qualitative Question 3 Billy drove from Fredericton to Saint John’s Describe his journey in WORDS

Answer Billy drove NORTH EAST from Fredericton to Saint John’s

Qualitative Those of you who are MATH lovers get ready, because you are about to do some CALCULATIONS Calculators ARE permitted here 

Quantitative Question 1 Sam drove from Victoria to Edmonton Using a RULER, this was measured to 3 cm From our SCALE, we know that 1 cm = 250 km How far did Sam drive in km?

Solution Expected to SHOW YOUR WORK Or else will lose lots of marks!!! Distance measured at 3 cm Scale: 1 cm = 250 km Therefore, 3 cm x 250 km = 750 km Same drove 750 km from Victoria to Edmonton

Quantitative Question 2 Stephy drove from Whitehorse to Iqaluit Using a RULER, this was measured to be 8 cm From our scale, we know that 1 cm = 250 km How far did Stephy drive in km?

Solution Make sure to show your work!!!  Distance measured: 8 cm Scale: 1 cm = 250 km Therefore, 8 cm x 250 km = 2000 km Stephy drove 2000 km from Whitehorse to Iqaliuit

REMEMBER! On a MAP, you will have to measure out the distance using a RULER For some maps, the scale may be easy such as 1 cm = 250 km However, some maps you may have to MEASURE the SCALE Some of your measurements may be in decimals (ex: 4.3 cm) Therefore a CALCULATOR is incredibly helpful!

Final type of Question Mixing QUANTITATIVE and QUALITATIVE together

Quantitative and Qualitative Jodie drives from Edmonton to Yellowknife What direction did she drive? How far did she drive?

Let’s figure out the direction!

I’d Accept NORTH Or NORTH NORTH EAST

Let’s Figure out the Distance! Measured on the map, the distance is 3.5 cm We know that 1 cm = 250 km What’s the distance?

Solution 3.5 cm x 250 km = 875 km Therefore: Distance = 875 km Direction = NORTH What’s our sentence?

Final Solution Jodie drove 875 km North from Edmonton to Yellowknife. Make sure to have both: DISTANCE DIRECTION

Assignment Complete the package and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY DO NOT ask any questions until instructions have been read Thank you very much 
