Starter: 2/9/2017 How can we determine if a species is fit to live in its environment?

On a sheet of paper: What is the definition for adaptation? Cite your evidence. What is the difference between the three popular view of adaption? Cite your evidence. In paragraph 4, it talks about organismal traits. Use context clues to explain what you think it means. What is an example of an adaptation to predation? Cite your evidence. What are physical constraints of adaptation? Looking at the picture of “Adaptive radiation in Galapagos finches,” how do you think the finches adapted, and did they come from the same ancestor?

Build a Species Pick a species: humans, bears, insects, alligators, dinosaurs, etc…. Research

Evolution of Species Branching Trees Chapter 7 Sections 3 & 5 Evolution of Species Branching Trees

Why are there so many species of plants and animals? Different environments Species have evolved to live in particular habitats.

Genetic Diversity Organisms within the same species do not all have identical traits. All of the genetic variations make up the “gene pool”

How New Species Form: Geographic isolation when some members of a species get cut off from the others Table Talk: How does the Colorado River affect squirrel species?

Quickwrite: Summarize how new species form.

How animals become extinct A change occurs in the species environment Climate change is the leading cause The species is unable to adapt and reproduce Extinct = no members of that species are still alive Dodo Tasmanian Tiger Passenger Pigeon Dinosaurs

Branching Tree Diagram Shows probable evolutionary relationships among organisms The base is a common ancestor for all organisms in the diagram Characteristics that appear lower on the tree developed before those higher on the tree

TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING According to this tree, fish are a common ancestor of what other species? Are arachnids (spiders) related to brachiopods?

A More Complex Evolutionary Tree! end
