What do you want to be when you grow up? These jobs require a college education.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? These jobs require a college or trade school education.

But what is college? College…? Does anyone want to share what they know about college?

College… Is where you go after high school to keep learning Is where you might live in a dorm Is where you have to study hard and do your best in school There are a lot of different types of colleges! Let’s learn about some now.

University Here are some examples: What universities do you know? Universities are colleges that usually take four years to finish Sometimes at universities you can live at the school in a place called a dorm. When you graduate from a University, you get a Bachelor’s Degree. There are hundreds of different things to study at a University. You have to go to a university if you want to be a doctor, nurse, veterinarian, teacher, counselor, or an architect. These are just some examples of the many jobs that require you to go to college. What universities do you know? Here are some examples:

Community College We have 5 community colleges in San Antonio. Do you know any community colleges? Community college usually takes 2 years to finish. Sometimes people start out at a community college and then apply to a university. At a community college, you can get an Associate’s Degree or Certificate. At community college, you can study a lot of different things: music, art, business, dance, electrical trades, construction, hair styling, and the list goes on and on an on! We have 5 community colleges in San Antonio.

Trade School Sometimes after high school, people choose another school to help them get ready for a job they want to do. These are called trade schools. Sometimes people are only at a trade school for a few months, for others it can take a few years. It all depends on what you want to study. A lot of times, trade schools focus on one specific subject, instead of having a lot of different majors to study. This is so that the students can focus on what they want to do! Here are examples of Trade Schools

So how do you get to college?

Step One: Finish Elementary School If you want to go to college, then it’s important to make sure that you keep going to school. Keep working hard, and do your best in your classes, because colleges will want to make sure you’re paying attention in class. Don’t forget to tell your teacher if you’re not understanding something, or having a hard time. They’ll do their best to help you!

Step 2: Middle School Middle school is a big step, but you can’t skip it. Middle School is fun because you start learning different subjects, and maybe you can even start joining sports or clubs if you want to. Start thinking about what you like to do, and learn more about yourself. You’re going to have more responsibilities in Middle School, so it’s important to pay attention to your classes. Remember to work hard and stay determined.

Step Three: High School You’ve almost made it! Now you just have to finish high school, and then you can start applying for college. It’s important to work hard in school, but especially in high school because colleges are able to see your grades! In high school there might be more clubs to join, more sports to play, or you can start volunteering. You can join these to meet new people, or just to have fun. Keep going to school so that you can graduate and go to college!

Step Four: College! Congrats, you did it! And when you start college you’ll be on your way to learning more and working towards your goals. Whether you go to a University, Community College, or Trade School make sure to keep working hard and doing your best in your classes. You’ll make new friends, join new clubs, and learn so much!

Myths about College Sometimes people think they can’t go to college because of things they’ve heard. Today we’re going to bust some of those myths.

Myth 1: “College is too expensive. I can’t afford to go.” Well, going to college does cost money. Sometimes, it can cost a lot. How much does it cost? For example, this is how much just one class costs at three different colleges in San Antonio. (This includes student fees, but not books!) That can be expensive. Can you guess how many large pepperoni pizzas from Pizza Hut you could buy with $3,415? San Antonio College UTSA University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) $286 $1,269 $3,415

Myth 1 busted! You can find ways to pay for college. For example: Scholarships. Scholarships are free money from an organization to help you pay for school. There are hundreds and hundreds of different scholarships being offered. When you’re in high school, you’ll start looking for these to help you pay for college. You can get scholarships for But it’s important to remember Usually scholarships require students to have good grades. So, it’s important to do your best in school. You can pay for college! Being Tall Being Short Studying Different Languages Getting Good Grades Being An Athlete Playing Music And so much more!

Myth 2: “My grades aren’t good. I can’t go to college.” We’ve kept saying that it’s important to get good grades in school, and it is. But sometimes classes are going to be hard, sometimes you’re going to make mistakes, and sometimes your grades won’t be as high as you want them to be. That’s okay, because…

Myth 2: Busted! You can always find your way to college! Maybe you don’t have all As, or all Bs, or maybe not even all Cs, but you can still go to college! As long as you graduate from high school, you will be able to go to college. Everyone is going to have a different journey to get to college, and that’s okay. College

Myth 3: “I don’t need to go to college.” There are a lot of people who think that they won’t benefit from college. But, let’s bust that myth!

Myth 3: Busted! What can college do for you? Like we said earlier, for some jobs you have to go to college. But for some jobs, even though you don’t have to go, it can help you make more money and have a secure job. But also, continuing your education after high school can help you learn new skills and meet new people!

Raise your hand if you want to go to college!
