CHS Futures Committee Notes for CHS Parent Group – October 10, 2012 Interested in participating?

“The Proposal” & The Process Our charge from CHS Governance: The larger issue of educational reform - CHS in the 21st Century - should be passed on to a committee that, in turn, would generate some recommendations for future staff consideration. Our task is NOT to make decisions for CHS Our task is NOT to guide the decision-making process Our task IS to make recommendations to be considered by CHS Governance Liaison Groups “The Proposal” & The Process

“The Proposal” & The Process Our charge from CHS Governance, restated Mission of CHS Futures Committee: To explore and recommend what CHS could/should look like in 5 years (within the context of where will be in 10 years) Scope of Futures Committee Responsibilities: Drivers of the need for this work Philosophy of Learning and Teaching in Ed. culture ID Constraints and Stakeholders Suggest Possible Programs Rethinking possible site(s) to support the programs “The Proposal” & The Process

What are the two main drivers that are pushing us at CHS? In 2003 we had 1300 students, we now have 1900 students and are growing at CHS at a rate of about 100 students per year – we are predicting that CHS will have about 2700 students by 2021 – way too many for this campus.  Yet, our community wants to maintain a “ … only one comprehensive high school… ” identity. The second driver for change is the need to convert our school system from a structure appropriate for the industrial age … to … a structure appropriate for the information age.  This conversion will allow us to deliver instruction in new ways more easily, and within programs of instruction suited to the new employment environment.  From “on-time, on-task, repetitive” to “independent thinker and problem solver” What are the two main drivers that are pushing us at CHS?

Graduation requirements Seat time Facilities CHS Vision School Board, SBE, and OSPI Comprehensive High School Model Purposes of evaluation Analogical thinking What constraints, prevailing conventions, and unknowns do we need to consider?

Perspective …. Interested? Specific proposal Broader direction What could change look like? How do we approach the change? Vision and culture desired Instructional practices to support that vision and culture School structure to support those instructional practices and thus that vision and culture Perspective …. Interested?
